Delmore “Buddy” Daye Learning Institute is a not-for-profit organization that addresses academic inequities and provides educational opportunities for Nova Scotians of African descent.

When the institute acquired new space, they hired Fathom Studio to create a design with cultural relevance that would not only highlight the work being done by the institute but also emphasize the narrative around the Afrocentric experience.

Familiar with eyecandy’ talent for custom work and their reputation for strong partnerships, Fathom Studio approached eyecandy to explore material/finish options. The project appealed to eyecandy’s fundamental values of equity and inclusivity and the team jumped onboard without hesitation. eyecandy worked with Fathom to understand their vision then got to work producing prototypes for the project.

These symbols are a significant part of Ghanaian culture as they are rich with meaning and are traditionally used for storytelling and passing on knowledge.

eyecandy SIGNS INC. willingly produced test samples and worked with us to achieve the results we were hoping for. Not only were we happy with the product they delivered but their installation was excellent. They looked over each location and addressed any issues that arose.”
— John DeWolf, Fathom Studio

The impressive body of wood signs used in this package was achieved with hand-blended stain which was sprayed over white oak to match existing millwork.

Polished brass letters and black raster bead braille are prevalent throughout the complete package creating contrast in materials for visual interest while maintaining accessibility.

The consistency through theme and colour speak to the strong design principles that eyecandy continually upholds.
