Project: Wayfinding Signage

Client: Eastern Health

Services: Supply and an install accessible wayfinding system

St. John’s Long-Term Healthcare Facility is the first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) healthcare facility in the Province of Newfoundland. The project, which features 460 beds in two four-story towers, was completed in 2014 and has served as the foundation for a long-lasting partnership between eyecandy and Eastern Health.

When Eastern Health was building the new long-term healthcare facility, they sought out Entro to design the interior wayfinding package, and contracted eyecandy to fabricate and install it.

Throughout the process, the team at eyecandy worked closely with Entro to ensure that their creative vision was respected. Giving due attention to the design details, eyecandy worked with Entro to create sign solutions that would achieve the design intent. Elements of visual interest were augmented by eyecandy through careful attention and fastidious commitment to the function of the signs and standards of accessible design.

eyecandy SIGNS’ cutting-edge technology and ability to problem-solve allowed all the challenging elements of fabrication and installation to come together. Operating as a maker-space studio, eyecandy utilizes their state-of-the-art technology such as photopolymer braille, 2.5D print and laser cutting, to design innovative solutions that supports the design integrity while breathing life into the designer’s vision.

Essential to this project are the colours woven throughout the wayfinding system giving subtle orientational and navigational cues. Entro built in a visual language that allows navigation to become universal and familiar with clear, defined visual cues in transition areas.

When entering a new wing, large graphics set the stage and a new colour and icon are introduced. The design of the wing’s suite of signs is fluid and intuitive and incorporates an easy to understand system using bright colours and clear messaging. Room signs also use visual language and are finished with a bevelled edge that is painted to match the wing identification colour. By exercising precision in every detail of the project, eyecandy has fabricated and installed a sign system that is cohesive, unobtrusive and accessible.
